History of The 100 Club

The 100 Club opened  at 100 Oxford Street in 1942 and early performers included Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong.

Later it went through a blues and soul period and Muddy Waters, B B King and Jackie Wilson all played there.

The early 60s saw several mod bands play there including Rod Stewart, The Who, The Kinks and the Spencer Davis Group.

In the mid 70s, it became the venue for all the top punk bands to play, including the Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash, Buzzcocks, and The Damned.

Other performers in recent years include Blur, Oasis, Paul Weller, Catatonia, Travis, Toploader, Muse, Ocean Colour Scene, Kula Shaker, Amy Winehouse, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, and David Bowie, and just before they played Glastonbury in 2009, the Specials themselves played a warm up gig there.

Therefore, it is very fitting that we have Jon Read and Tim Smart with us, the trumpet and trombone players from the Specials brass section who have played with them since they reformed in 2008, guesting with us for the gig!
